What is a Lipid Barrier?

Your lipid barrier, or acid mantle, is a protective film made up of water, sweat, sebum (oil), and lipids. These elements create a barrier on top of your skin, protecting it from dehydration and foreign substances. It's like an ecosystem for your skin!

How do you Maintain Your Lipid Barrier?

Maintaining this ecosystem is crucial for the overall health of your skin. If the acid mantle is thrown off in any way it can lead to inflammation, irritation, dehydration, flakiness, and acne to name a few. Many clients disrupt their lipid barrier without realizing it by using harsh products, using inappropriate skin care for their skin type, stripping away all their natural oil, over exfoliation, and cleansing their skin with hot water. Luckily, your lipid barrier is pretty simple to maintain as long as you know how!

Knowing the skin's natural pH level will most likely help you the most. The skin is slightly acidic sitting between 4.5 - 5.5. Using products that are below or above this level too often without getting it back to its natural state can start to cause issues. Over exfoliation is another way your barrier can be damaged. Stick to exfoliating a couple nights a week depending on your skin type, condition, and age. Reach out to a local Aesthetician or Dermatologist for help!

Make sure to cleanse your skin with LUKEWARM water since hot water will cause damage. Lastly, incorporate humectants into your skincare routine. Humectants (Sodium-PCA or Hyaluronic Acid to name a couple) help attract and keep water in your skin. Topical hydration (water) is crucial to maintain a healthy barrier!
